You have $20,000 to spend. What car do you buy? Can be anything. You could buy something cheap and use the rest to upgrade. What do you do?

I'd just pay off my Mini to eliminate that payment, drive it like I stole it till the warranty runs out and trade it in for something practical.

Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT (2005) in manual for about ten grand. Spending the rest of the money on insurance, gas, and tires.

Option A: Pay off current car. Have ~$5k left over. Start shopping for another car.
Option B: ~20% down payment on a high-optioned midluxury car, a BMW 3 Series or Cadillac X/CTS.
Option C: Buy in cash a new city runabout, Ford Fiesta or Mazda2 or similar. (Current car not as good in cities.)
Option D: Significant down payment on fun car, Ford ST or BRZ/FR-S preferred. Pay off note in a year while saving money for upgrades.

I would probably upgrade/restore my miata. Do it up exactly how I want it. Then pocket the rest.
Or Maybe find a nice FD and start all over!

I'd either go for a reliable truck, '05 and up F-150 or 250 with the 3V 5.4. Extended or Crew Cab, don't much car about 2x4 or 4x4.
Or I'd go for a fun RWD car, but I think I'd be inclined to spend far less than $20k on something like that, closer sub $10k, so maybe I could still get a truck with the leftover money :D

a 135i can also be had under $20k if you want twin turbos.

Okay, it's $900 over budget but it's fully loaded including the M-sport package. If you are fine with just a sport and a less desirable color combination (space gray+coral red=$$$) you can easily find one for under $17k. I will admit, manuals tend to go for a little more.

Beat me to it! Upgrade the seats, really nice tires. And go autoxing.

$20k to spend?
Well I'd probably spend it on a down payment on one of these:
If I had no income to make payments, I probably wouldn't spend $20k on a car, especially not a car + upgrades (aka money down the toilet). Maybe spend $10k on a decent G35 coupe, save the other 10k, because again I have no income.
Now if it's someone else's money, sure I'd prob buy a C5 Z06.

+1. I would restore my Miata, build/turbo the engine, get, do ALL the suspension and wheel&tire upgrades. Imagine the amount of Miata you could do for 20 grand...
